Wheel Spinning for All

November 23, 2011

On 12th November the Guild held a Wheel Spinning Day in the beautiful surroundings of Letchworth Settlement. All levels were welcome and spare wheels were provided.

There was no lack of inspiration, as members brought along their own handspun yarn and creations.

Beginners were given plenty of support, whilst more experienced spinners could feast upon many different types of fibre (including crab shells!) and were taught more complex techniques such as long-draw, spinning from the fold and spinning with short staple fibres (such as cotton). Different methods of plying and the skill of carding wool to make rolags were also demonstrated.

I was amazed at the variety of spinning wheels at the day, from the traditional to the more modern, but all being put to good use.
